In the early twentieth century, radium was a miracle. Discovered by Marie and Pierre Curie in 1898, the glowing element captivated the public imagination. It was added to face creams, toothpaste, tonics, and even chocolate—all marketed as health products harnessing the “energy of the atom.” But perhaps no application seemed more magical than radium paint, which made watch dials, clock faces, and instrument panels glow softly in the dark. For the young women hired to apply that paint, however, the miracle would become a slow-motion nightmare—one that ultimately reshaped American labor law forever.

A Dream Job in the Dial-Painting Studios

Beginning around 1917, companies like the United States Radium Corporation in Orange, New Jersey, and the Radium Dial Company in Ottawa, Illinois, began hiring young women—some as young as fourteen—to paint luminous numbers onto watch and instrument dials. Demand exploded during World War I, when glowing dials became essential equipment for soldiers in dark trenches and pilots flying at night.

By the standards of the era, dial painting was an enviable job. The pay was excellent—dial painters could earn three times what typical factory workers made—and the work was clean, social, and considered glamorous. The women worked in bright studios, chatting as they painted. Radium dust from the paint settled on their hair, clothing, and skin, causing them to glow faintly when they walked home at night. Some even painted their teeth and fingernails with the luminous paint for fun before dates, delighted by the eerie shimmer. They became known locally as the “ghost girls.”

The technique they were taught would prove fatal. To paint the tiny numerals precisely, workers were instructed to shape their camel-hair brushes into a fine point using their lips—a practice called “lip-pointing.” Dip, lip, paint. Repeat hundreds of times a day. With every stroke, the women swallowed small amounts of radium.

The Poison Within

What the dial painters didn’t know—and what their employers had good reason to suspect—was that radium is a “bone-seeker.” Chemically similar to calcium, ingested radium is absorbed into the skeleton, where it bombards surrounding tissue with radiation for years. The element’s half-life is roughly 1,600 years; once inside the body, it never stops.

The first symptoms appeared in the early 1920s, and they were horrifying. Workers developed aching joints, crumbling teeth, and mysterious jaw pain. Dentists were baffled when extracted teeth left wounds that refused to heal—and worse, when pieces of jawbone came away with the teeth. The condition became known as “radium jaw”, a form of necrosis in which the bone literally rotted while the victim was still alive.

Consider the case of Mollie Maggia, a dial painter in New Jersey who died in 1922 at just twenty-four years old. Her decline was agonizing: her teeth fell out one by one, abscesses spread through her mouth, and her jawbone became so brittle her dentist removed pieces of it with his fingers. When she died, her death certificate blamed syphilis—a diagnosis that conveniently smeared her reputation and shielded her employer. Years later, her exhumed body was found to be so radioactive it exposed photographic film.

Denial and Cover-Up

The companies’ response was a masterclass in corporate deflection. Notably, the scientists and executives at these firms already understood radium’s dangers—laboratory workers handled the material with lead screens, tongs, and protective equipment. The dial painters received no such protections and no warnings.

When workers began falling ill, the companies denied any connection to radium. U.S. Radium commissioned a study by Harvard physiologist Cecil Drinker in 1924, which found dangerous conditions and clear evidence of radium poisoning. The company suppressed the report and circulated a doctored version claiming the workers were in fine health. Company doctors examined ailing women without telling them the results—or told them outright that they were perfectly healthy while internal records said otherwise.

The strategy was cynical but effective in the short term: delay, deny, and wait. Many companies calculated that sick workers would die before they could win in court.

The Fight for Justice

The legal battle that followed faced enormous obstacles:

  • Statutes of limitations: New Jersey law required injury claims to be filed within two years of exposure—but radium poisoning often took five years or more to manifest.
  • Scientific novelty: Radium poisoning was not a recognized occupational disease, making compensation claims nearly impossible.
  • Finding lawyers: Many attorneys refused the cases, fearing powerful corporations and unwinnable legal theory.

In 1927, a young attorney named Raymond Berry agreed to represent five New Jersey women—Grace Fryer, Edna Hussman, Katherine Schaub, and sisters Quinta McDonald and Albina Larice—who became known in the press as the “Radium Girls.” Grace Fryer had spent two years just searching for a lawyer willing to take her case.

The trial drew international attention, and the details were heartbreaking. The women were so ill they could not raise their arms to take the oath. Some were told by doctors they had only months to live. Facing a public relations disaster, U.S. Radium settled in 1928, paying each woman $10,000 plus a $600 annual pension and medical expenses—a significant sum, though no amount could restore their health.

In Illinois, dial painter Catherine Wolfe Donohue pressed her own case against Radium Dial in the late 1930s, testifying from her deathbed. She weighed less than seventy pounds when she won her landmark ruling in 1938, shortly before her death. Her victory established radium poisoning as a compensable occupational disease.

A Legacy Written in Law—and in Bone

The Radium Girls’ suffering produced lasting change. Their cases helped establish crucial precedents:

  • The right of individual workers to sue employers for damages caused by occupational disease
  • Reforms to statutes of limitations for illnesses with long latency periods
  • New industrial safety standards for handling radioactive materials
  • Momentum toward the eventual creation of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in 1970

Their tragedy also advanced science. Researchers studied the dial painters for decades, and the data gathered from their bodies informed radiation safety standards used during the Manhattan Project and in nuclear industries to this day. In a grim irony, the women who were told radium was harmless became the foundation of modern radiation protection.

Remembering the Ghost Girls

In 2011, the town of Ottawa, Illinois, unveiled a statue honoring its dial painters—a bronze figure of a young woman holding a paintbrush in one hand and wilting tulips in the other. It stands as a reminder that workplace protections we now take for granted were purchased at a terrible price.

The Radium Girls were not activists by choice. They were ordinary young women—teenagers, sisters, new brides—who wanted good jobs and trusted their employers. When that trust was betrayed, they fought back with the only things they had left: their voices and their dwindling time. Their bones still glow in their graves, and their courage still echoes in every workplace safety regulation written since.
